resilient farm design & nursery

Berkeley Springs, West Virginia

Est. 2017

Well it all started in the sixth grade when Carly moved from Indiana to right down the street from Greg in Maryland. Yada yada yada we graduated from Indiana University in 2011 then traveled around working on different types of farms to figure out what we really liked. We worked with pasture raised livestock, organic market gardening, edible landscaping, tree crops, nursery production, and permaculture. In 2013 we lived and interned with Peter Bane and Keith Johnson in Bloomington, IN who were at the time the editors of the Permaculture Activist (now called Permaculture Design Magazine). Greg began working with Bread and Roses, a permaculture based nursery and edible landscaping company. Carly found her dream career of working with preschool. And we were also running a grass-based raw milk dairy at the time. We had a great opportunity to move to a farm in Berkeley Springs, WV in 2017. It was difficult to leave such a great network of awesome small farmers in Bloomington and move to West Virginia where we didn’t know anyone. Slowly but surely we have grown our network of regenerative agriculture minded friends here in WV. Forest Shepherd Farm is primarily a nursery business for now but we are just getting started! In the near future we plan to offer fruit and nuts from the plants we grow, along with our homemade biochar and charcoal, and hand-dyed items. Greg does landscape consulting and project implementation. Carly is an ERAFANS certified nature school teacher. And most important of all, we spend our time being parents to our active 2 year old son, Graham.
